Child Adoption Law in Ohio: Grandparent and Step Parent Adoptions

Grandparents and stepparents must follow the same process as any other adopters. In Franklin County, a spouse can apply through the probate court to adopt a stepchild. The stepparent must been married to one of the child's birth parents for at least one year prior to the final approval of the adoption. (Franklin County Probate Court Local Rule 75.17(H)).  Please note that the biological father must consent to the stepparent adoption unless the court finds that he has unjustifiably not had contact with the child for at least a year.
