Medical and Health Data Privacy: HIPAA and Beyond: Home

Introduction

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was enacted in 1996. The goal of HIPAA was to guarantee the availability and renewability of health insurance coverage, and to limit restrictions due to preexisting conditions. HIPAA also mandates security standards and safeguards, and privacy standards for medical records, which is the focus of this libguide.

HIPAA allows your health care power of attorney to access your medical records. Please see my Ohio Power Attorney Law Libguide for more information.
